Default Work-Jobs

Regarding the new rules allowing non PR imigrants to work 20 hours per
week. Does Oz have a minimum wage as here in the UK.

If not what is the average wage one can expect to earn in a unskilled
job. Such as a van driver,Warehouseman, Supermarket ect ect.

When we were there (bout 5 months ago) they had just brought in a minimum
wage, I think it worked out at $700 a week (or slightly less)

What visa are you on about? What new rules?

ACTU 2004 Minimum Wages Case Fact Sheet

The ACTU will seek a $26.60 a week increase in minimum award pay rates
in its 2004 Minimum Wage Case in the Australian Industrial Relations
Commission.

1.6 million employees paid under Federal and State industrial Awards,
including many part-time and casuals, rely on the claim for their only
pay rise each year.

The case would lift the Federal Minimum Wage from $11.80 to
$12.50 per hour.

The case would increase the full time Federal Minimum Wage from $448.40
per week to $475 per week, or from $23,316 a year to $24,700 a year.

From 1996 to 2001, the weekly income of the bottom 20% of earners in
Australia increased by $3 compared to $109 for the top 20%. (ABS 6523.0
Household and Income Distribution Table 1P13)

Increasing award wages is an effective tool to reverse growing income
inequality. Award workers represent 21% of the workforce but receive
only 13% of the national wages bill.

The ACTU’s 2004 claim is calculated to add 0.1% to economy wide wage
costs, 0.08% to inflation, and to have a negligible impact on employment

The Visa I was refering to was a RETIREE Visa which I assume comes
under the heading Temporary Visa as against a Permanent Visa. I may be
wrong but I understand that earlier this year the rules were changed
and people with this type of Visa were now allowed to work up to 20
hours per week?

Thanks for the other info

It sure does. I wish (oh how I wish!) it were the $700 pw mentioned by
Jen, but it is in fact $448.40 per 38hr week ($11.80 ph) for
permanent/non-casual adult employees, and $14.16 ph for adult casual
workers.
NB: If employed casually you have no entitlement to holiday pay, sick
pay, etc. Because there is a limit to the number of hours per week you
can work for one employer and still be considered casual, you'll find
people working casually at 2 or 3 different jobs per day/week to get a
full week's employment. Not relevant in your case though..

    >If not what is the average wage one can expect to earn in a unskilled

A lot of jobs are covered by either a Federal or State Award which sets
out minimum pay and conditions for either the type of job or the type of
industry/particular employer.

There's lots of info on Awards at the WageNet website
<www.wagenet.gov.au>, especially at
http://www.wagenet.gov.au/Wagenet/Gu...ideAssist1.asp
with links to State Awards relevant to your intended location.

As in most countries where a national minimum wage is set, employers
tend to take this as being the going rate for unskilled work if the
worker is not otherwise covered by an Award. If you use the JobSearch
website <www.jobsearch.gov.au> you'll often find the pay rate quoted as
"Award" - it's then up to you to search WageNet to find the Award most
likely to be relevant. Here, we just make a phone call to Wageline, and
a nice person in that office does all the searching for us :-) They
don't seem to do email though.

I see that the minimum wage rate in the UK is now $4.50 ph (AU$10.70) -
so it's a tad lower than here. And remember, (ducking for cover) the
cost of living is ...OOPS!! _can_ be lower here. <g>

Hope the above is of some use to you.

Retirement visa holders can now work for 20 hours per week. This rule
changed on 1 March 2003. If you have a retirement visa granted before
that date with a 'no work' condition, you can obtain for free a new
visa up to the old visa's expiry date with a limited work condition.
