Default A word to the wise: Provide proof of health insurance for interview

Nearly everything went swimmingly at Elena's interview today. I say
nearly because her visa application wasn't approved because she didn't
have proof of US health insurance coverage. I scrambled around and got
the proof together and sent it via DHL to the consulate, due to arrive
by close of business Monday, December 1, 2003. Had I been aware of the
requirement we would have had the proof when Elena went in for her
interview. She said that the three women ahead of her in the interview
queue were all turned down on the same basis. Needless to say, she was
disappointed.

The list of documents asked for in the packet 3 interview instructions
makes no mention of health insurance docs. It isn't that I disagree
with the concept that all immigrants should provide such proof, but the
least they could do is make mention of it so that the process isn't
drawn out needlessly. I think this falls under the general category of
the consulate not having their act together. Are all consulates
requiring proof of US health insurance? Or, was it my responsibility to
investigate beyond what the consulate sent me? I invite your comments.

Richard,

that sucks but hopefully it is only a small hiccup in the process and
the visa will be issued shortly.

I agree, if they want proof of something such as insurance, they have to
be expected to specify the requirement. The last i was aware, us mere
mortals were still not capable of mind reading.

I don't know much about health insurance companies, but I would think it
would be extremely hard to add her, if she isn't in the country right?
She wouldn't even have a SSN, and I would think that's necessary to add
her to your health plan. But then again, what do I know...Good luck,
hope you 2 get your visa soon!

Wish I had some info for ya!

Hi RichardIII,

I'm adding to your post the fact that Elena is your wife and you're
doing a K3 visa. That might make a difference to those out there
reading your post.

I very much doubt the consulate would require a fiance(e) to provide
proof health insurance in the USA, as they wouldn't be able to be
covered yet by the petitioner.

I'm sorry to hear of this little delay. Hopefully they'll receive the
proof, and grant her visa right away.

And I totally agree with being frustrated over all the things they seem
to miss putting in the instructions.

Best Wishes for a speedy turnaround!! :-)

Rene

First of all, that sounds like a really retarded requirement. Millions
of Americans don't have health insurance, so how can a pre-alien have
health insurance? I'm glad she did have coverage so that they can
give her the visa, but I think that's bull and someone needs to take up
that issue with the consulate.

And did someone notice something weird in this thread? The first time I
read it and tried to post, the words "health insurance" were underlined
in yellow every time they occurred and clicking on it led to an
advertisement tha froze my compuer. I don't see he same thing now, but
it's creepy weird.

Heba...how strange! That didn't happen to me. And, I agree with you
about it being a strange requirement. Having health insurance in the
states is not a requirement even for USC's. :-(

Jamie -

Actually, I had already added her to my group policy at work because I
expected her to be here ANY TIME NOW. But that policy doesn't become
effective until January 1, 2004. So what I did was get a temporary
policy from an underwriter that issues TRAVEL insurance - no physical or
SSN necessary, I only had to provide her passport number. It was really
pretty cool. Look up Liaison International if you are curious. Thanks
for the good thoughts, they are the only thing that keep me going
sometimes.

You invite my comments??

These are my comments........

How in God's name can I insure my husband before he lives in the U.S.
and is involved in American society?? Most insurance plans require a
social security #, a place of residence, etc. etc. He has health
coverage in Morocco. Why would he need it in a place he hasn't even
begun to live in?? This is a ridiculous injustice. Many American's
don't have health insurance.

Richard,

Tell me this isn't so.

Leslie
