Just to clarify this for the benefit of the OP:

Stonehenge is about 20 miles from Winchester.

Stonehenge is *not* really near to Lewes except insofar as they are both
in southern England.

Are you thinking of doing this as a day trip, with your luggage, and
returning to London in the PM. I think that would not be a relaxing time.

If you are planning on staying in London, dump your bags at the hotel, and
take a relaxing trip down the river Thames. You can head upriver from
Westminster to Kew and Richmond, or downriver to Greenwich (much more
industrial).

If planning Winchester as stepping stone for tour of England in a car. Then
not a bad idea. Depends on route you are planning.

We were planning on taking our luggage with us (one bag...we travel light) so
as to avoid going to the hotel. But now that you mention it...even one bag can
be cumbersome. I love your idea of going up the river...how could we fall
asleep on a river?

And thanks to this NG for all the other suggestions. We will try to pay a
visit to all of the places suggested sooner or later. When you live in a
suburb of Milwaukee any place in your wonderful country is worth a visit!
