Where can Canadian get a Tax No. to work in US? Contract

I have a one week contract to do in the US (I am a Canadian). I
need to
get a Tax number (not sure what is the proper name for it). Where
would I apply for one (I need a phone number for Buffalo area).
Also, how long does it take to get a tax number (couple of days, or
several months?) Thanks

Do you have US immigration status to work that week in the
US? What will you be doing?

Generally speaking, you cannot obtain a
SS# in the US w/o having some type of work status from immigration.
However, you may be able to obtain an ITIN number.

Again though, the
bigger question is whether you are allowed to work in the US for that
one week. Even though it is only one week, you still need to qualify
under an immigration category.

What kind of work is it? Canadians can't work in the U.S.
without authorization.
