It might vary with the species, but a quick perusal of "BIOSIS
Previews" indicates that geckos call when they're in a (potentially)
aggressive encounter with another gecko, or when they're looking for
love. Given the 2 choices of "Go away!" or "Come here!" I guess they
could speak up any old time. The different situations probably mean
different calls.

Maybe you could find someone with pet geckos, dangle a microphone, and
open a cold one (or several).

There don't seem to be any geckos in Tassie, per
http://www.kingsnake.com/oz/ . If you've got the time and the
inclination, you could try asking a ranger at the nearest national
park, staff at a wildlife park, or even employees of the local pet
store what they know about geckos. Or ask the nearest librarian...
