Default what happens if

I am just about ready to send in my paperwork to dima, applying for
fiancee visa. Well wouldn't you know it, I go and look at qantas.com,
the dirty rotten scoundrels had to offer me a RT flight (lax-melb) for
$705.00. Darn I just had to book that flight, felt it was a good deal.

So I'm wondering...what happens if we just decide to get married while
I'm there. Any chance they'd let me just stay there and file all the
paperwork there without having to leave the country?

Yes, but be warned. If you arrive on a tourist visa and so far as look like
you're planning to stay longer. (example, bringing stuff in your luggage
that you wouldn't normally bring on holidays) You wont make it out of the
airport.

The comment below is correct. Refusal of entry is possible if you
have a tourist visa or ETA and they think you plan to apply for a visa
onshore.

If you have a tourist visa with condition 8503 - No Further Stay you
can't apply onshore.

Applying onshore does also carry risks like:
- being stuck with tourist visa conditions until visa is approved
- you must apply while lawful
- the bridging visa you get does not allow travel, for which you need
to make a separate application.

Yopu should get some advice from IARC or RILC after you get to
Australia before you make up your mind. If you apply for a fiancee
visa before you leave, you could always have it stamped in Auckland
when it's granted, but you don't get any bridging visa to keep you in
Australia in the meantime.

"get some advice from IARC or RILC "

Not sure what that is. I'll look it up. We mostly likely wouldn't get
married...but just want to look into my options. I'm curious
though...what does NZ have to do with any of this?

If you apply for an Australian visa offshore, you must normally be
offshore at visa grant. However, many people go to the Australian
Consulate General in Auckland, New Zealand rather than back to their
home countries for visa grant.

Do a forum search on 'Auckland'.

I would add that having be *almost* granted an Australian permanent visa
(offshore Australian visas cannot be granted in Australia) does not
entitle the person any special access to NZ insofar as visas are
concerned. If a person is a visa national, he/she will still be required
to apply for an be granted a NZ visa to enter NZ to get granted the
Australian visa.

This obviously would be much tidier if one is not a visa national for NZ
