Hi Gordon,
The basic rule is that work is work, whether paid or not. If you were
planning to do some volunteer work while here you should consider coming on
a business ETA if eligible - go to www.eta.immi.gov.au . But there are a
wide range of circumstances and it would be good to talk to a migration
agent. The following is from the DIMIA website with respect to student visa
holders:
Can a Student visa holder WITH CONDITION 8105 undertake volunteer work or
work experience and are they limited by their work condition to 20 hours a
week?
For Student visas, 'work' includes both paid and unpaid/voluntary work and
any other activity which would normally attract remuneration. However, work
that is a registered component of the student's course of study or training
for the award to be attained is not regarded as work for the purposes of
assessing work rights.
Cheers
