Default VISAs (Tourist - Defacto)

Hi all,
I have been reading posts here for a while but never actually posted
anything until now. I would like to thank all of you who have helped to
make this such a clarifying forum.

I am considering heading out to Oz, being Oz from Parent. I have visited
5 or 6 times during my life time, and find it an exciting country. My
partner and I, we would like to head out to Australia, and have been
gathering information on OZ and Entry Visas.

I have some questions I would like to place on the forum concerning
VISAs, and see from peoples past experience and knowledge.

My partner and I, have been going out for over 1,5 years but actually
“living together in a defacto relationship since March of this year,
though our first “legal paper proving such a relationship is from June.

We are hoping of heading out to Australia around November, and after
careful examination of the different Visas available, we are initially
considering a Tourist Visa for my partner. Mainly because we want to see
what life is like there, introduce my partner to family, old friends etc
and then consider staying there if we like it.
We would first consider a 6 month Tourist Visa, and after proving we
have been in a 12 month “Defacto Ralationship change to the pertinent
Visa. Hence my partner would be able to stay and work.

Now here is where my fears come in.
Is it possible to change from a tourist visa to a Defacto “Visa once we
are in Australia?
Is it particularly hard?
Should we be COMPLETELY clear about our intentions while filling out her
Tourist Visa?
Would they turn down our Initial Tourist VISA because of stating we are
in a Defacto Relationship (Explicit Question on the Tourist VISA form)
Is DIMIA extremely wary of this way of achieving our permanent stay in
Australia?
Are there any hidden perks we should be careful about?
Has any one got any hands on experience on this “Modus Operandi.
We would probably have to extend my partners VISA a further SIX months,
and I have heard from a friend who has gone to OZ and extended the
Tourist VISA an extra 6 months, was asked if they had an Oz Partner.
Would this be the same and cause an impediment? Hence my initial wish to
have everything clear of what we want to do.

We are not trying to hide ANYTHING, we just want to live somewhere else
and have a bit of an adventure, i.e. OZ. but DIMIA seems to think we are
all “could be illegal immigrants. Well, we want to be “LEGAL
immigrants, and want to do it the proper way and abide by the rules.

Any comments, experience, further info links or anything would be
appreciated.

Good Bye

- Are you an Australian citizen or permanent resident yourself?
- What nationality is your partner?
- If you want to apply for a visa to live in Australia, why don't you
apply for it at a DIMIA office offshore?

a)I am Australian Citizen.
b)My partner is Spanish.
c) To apply for a VISA to live in Australia, we need to be living in a
Defacto Relationship for at least 12 months, we have been living in a
defacto relationship since March, but with "legal proof" since June.

We want to see if we both like Australia before deciding we want to
stay. And are planning on leaving to Oz in November.

We are currently offshore, in Spain.

Thx for the reply.

Can any one shed any light?
