Default Visa Waiver - Proof of Employment Required?

British Home Office advice line tells my HR department this is not
required... though I think I`d feel better approaching US immigration
with a letter of this type in my possession.
Any advice or pointers to official info stating this is a good thing to
have?
Rgds,
