Default visa conversion F-2 to J-1- URGENT

Hi,

I am currently on F-2 (dependent) visa as my husband is in F-1 student
visa at University of Wisconsin, Madison, US. I am applying for post
doc position in the same university. The University most probably is
going to issue me J-1 visa. I want to know do I have to go back to the
country of permanent residence (India) for getting my visa status
converted from F2 to J1? What are other complications?

Need your advice urgently.

Thanks

Geetu
