Default Visa 417 - return ticket?

Hi

My daughter's boyfriend has just got his 417 temporary visa - 12 month
working holiday. We have been looking at booking one way flights to
Brisbane at the beginning of February (we have PR visas), however have
been advised that I will need to book a return flight for my daughter's
boyfriend as he only has a temporary visa.

I've gone through all his paperwork but can't find anything which
mentions the need to book a return flight. Will he have to produce a
return ticket when we get to Oz? Not sure what the process is with
customs once we arrive in Oz as his Visa is electronic and the only
paperwork he has is an email confirming he has received a 12 month visa.
Worried we get over there and he gets sent back!!

Hope someone can clarify.

Many thanks

Hello,

He should be fine - the actual requirement is that he has a return
ticket (or onward ticket - so not necessarily back to the UK) OR the
funds to purchase one. So if he has $1000 in a bank account and prints
out a statement to bring with him he should be fine. The reality is WHV
holders from the UK rarely get asked unless they look dodgy/dishevelled.

I would guess he'll breeze through immigration with no questions asked,
but if he has a printed out bank statement he should be absolutely fine.

Quite correct, as long as they can see he has the funds to get the
tickets he will be fine. They would find it hard to insist on return
tickets for WHVs as often airlines won't book that far ahead.

I suggest that he doesn't go through immigration as part of the family
group though - if they think he is here as a boyfriend, and the family
is settling, there is just a chance they may think he intends to stay
longer than a year. If possible I would get him to go through
separately, or just as a "friend" rther than as a "significant other"!
