Default Videophone Interviews UK to Oz

Well, in what is now the time honoured tradition of bad timing in the
Rab migration process I have been shortlisted for interview for an
Environmental Health Officer post in Townsville! The interview is to
take place in the early hours of Tuesday morning (Tuesday PM there). It
is to be conducted via videoconference of which I have neither the
equipment or any experience. That's not a problem, I can get that
organised.

Anyone got any experience of interviews done in this way and the sort of
general things they ask? Best practices that sort of thing?

I just hope it's not about my visa!! (unless I can delay it unless
"early July")

I did one a few years back for a contract with the Government. It was
with a panel of 4 in Melbourne, I had to go to a company in Reading that
had all the equipment. It basically went along normal lines to an
English interview going through what the contract required and then
thorugh my qualifications and past experience. Once they were happy
with that there were of plenty of questions about Australia and why I
wanted to work/live there. They were just trying to make sure that I
wasn't wasting their time and was actually going to move to Australia.

I found it more difficult than a regular interview because it was very
hard to guage the feedback that you normally get face to face even
though you can still see them. I think this is maybe due to the time
lag that prevents conversation flowing particularly when there are 5
people involved. They were just as nervous as me.

I also worked with 2 other brits who had also gone through the video
interview. Generally if they are prepared to make the effort to do then
you probably already qualify for the job they just want to make sure you
can do what your CV says and that could actually work with you.

Cheers

Neil

Thanks Neil, I have never done one so it will be interesting. I just
have to contact them to confirm what hardware/software is required.

Thanks very much for your help

Rob

I had nothing on the technology side to worry about at all! Townsville
Council found an office 15 mins drive from my house and booked a room.
How good is that! Arrived for the 7.00am interview last Thursday. Sat in
a room with 4 chairs around a desk and a telly with camera on top.
Because of technical problems with the link dropping out so it was
abandoned after 4 attempts. Still, I got to meet the people on the
panel. The interview resumed by phone this morning and seemd to go OK. I
answered all the questions (I think) and only needed a couple of
prompts. They seemed very nice and put me at ease very quickly. I will
hear in the next week after they have got references for me and the
other 3 applicants. Fingers crossed as they will pay our air fare and
removal expenses!

Now PLEEEEEEASE DIMIA grant my visa as I will look VERY silly if I cant
produce one before giving in my notice at work.
