Default Venice Mosquitos

Just came back from Venice with 40-50 Mosquito bites

One variety bites by day, another by night

The guide books I read did not mention this threat, so I was
totally unprepared.

BE WARNED!

News to me. However, Venice is in pretty swampy region (actually built on
one) which is what mosquitos like.

Actually, we were surprised in April to find the mosquitoes terrible in
Florence but not in Venice. I have no idea whether that is usual or just a
quirk at that particular time.

Incidentally, does anyone know what kind of shop one would go to in Italy to
find mosquito repellent, insecticide, etc.?

I'm surprised too. I was in Venice for 4 days in June and there was
not a single mosquito in sight. And I'm very susceptible to mosquitos.

Jeezus, spot the American who lives in fear...

Nothing quite like stating something as inconsequential as mosquitos
as a "threat". Why did you not do something about it after the first
half a dozen bites?

The farmacia...I found Calm-o-Gel to be magic....I've never had
mosquito issues in Italy (I have previously gone Sept-Oct) , but have
been eaten alive on the Croatian coast.

Do you know which country in the EU is the only country to have reported
a local malaria contamination case (1997) in the last 10 years ?

2 million people will die from malaria this year, 500 million are
infected.
