USA computers in OZ-please help
Hello. (First of all, let me just preface by saying that I am farily
computer illiterate.) I am thinking of buying a new computer here in
the USA. However, I am planning on migrating to OZ in about 1.5 years.
Will my computer work in Australia? I am worried because the
power/wattage in OZ is higher than in the US. Can anyone help?? Also, I
have heard that computers in Australia are expensive and perhaps not as
advanced as in the US??? I hope know one takes offense to that...that
is just what I have heard, please correct me if I am wrong.
Thank you!
Emily

Re: USA computers in OZ-please help
Hi Emily,
Most computers I have seen have a small slide switch on the back of the
power supply unit that changes from 110 to 240 volts.
Am I right in thinking that USA runs on 110v?
Worst case scenario is that you buy a new PSU to put in your case when you
get to Oz. I know you can get a PSU here in the UK for about £25 ( about $50
USD ?? ) - don't know how much they are in Ozzy.
Best regards.....

Emily, we have taken computers to New Zealand which has 220v [and
brought them back to the US/still run just fine].
As long as the computers have a dual voltage switch [most have], you
will be ok. Just ensure it is switched over before plugging it in
down under.
You most likely will need a new power cord i.e. from the computer to
the wall as chances are, the mains plug prongs will be different.
Monitor - if your monitor has a universal label on it, it will be
fine. Again, just a new mains power cord.
Check your printer's/scanner's etc handbooks - my HP printer's
handbook showed a power cord available from local sources.
However the cost was NZ$129 so I chose to just buy a new one when I
arrived - try and do some costings on these accessory items as it may
be cheaper to just buy new upon arrival [plus you have a warranty].
Ditto for other items such as sewing machines [my Brother was
compatible/just had to buy a mains cord].
Reality - any computer you buy now, is going to be obselete in 1.5
years! If you must, wait until near the time you are moving.
Why on earth would Australia be 'behind' the US in technology?
It is very much 'up to date'.
Are you packing yourself or having a moving company do it?
Electronics are generally NOT covered by insurance - check regarding
special insurance to cover these items.

We're bringing 2 computers from Canada when we come. My husband
the nerd says that the power thing is fine. You just need to
replace the plug.

Re: USA computers in OZ-please help
Thanks for the help, dotnron and Cath!
I have no idea why Australia would be behind in technology, Cath. When
I was visiting Cairns, Queensland, I heard that they were a bit behind
in technology. Perhaps this is true but only for that area or smaller
towns like Cairns??? Just a thought.
Thanks again!

Re: USA computers in OZ-please help
Brought mine from canada and all you will need to do is take the black cords
from the monitor and computer to a computer store and they will sell you two
new ones that will work here. Same if you have a laptop, you'll only need
to replace the the cord not the whole power supply.

Only a 'Yank' could believe it!!
Australia is a wealthy First World country, just like the USA - except that
Australians travel outside their own borders much, much more frequently than
the average American.
Electronics, computers etc are much the same the whole world over - prices
can and do vary, but Australia is a 'free trading' nation with no import
duties on most profucts, and just the one flat 'Sales Tax' - called the
gst - set at 10%.
Have a Nice Day!!

Re: USA computers in OZ-please help
Why are you bashing Emily when she's right, the same computer in the US is
lower than in Aus and it's highly likely that you would find more
technically advanced equipment cause it's cheaper and the markets nearly 20
times the size.
Yes it's a first world nation but I would say it's people aren't all that
wealthy. I see alot of people here (far more than I used to see at home or
on many travels to the US) that seem to have to do without. And what is one
of the most common complaints with immigrants in Aus - wages are really low
here. When every other developed nation understands that their people want
a good life with and a good paying job old johnny is actively driving wages
down.
