Default Under SIR visa I've found it hard to...

Hi fellow aus wannabes

I've found it hard to get decent work in the field in which I originally
applied. I'm still in the building trades but not in my nominated field.
Does anyone have any experience or knowledge on whether a future PR visa is
in jeopardy if I don't work in my nominated field.

Thx

You would be best advised to talk to the state government that sponsored
you. No-one knows what the consequences will be for SIR holders unable
to find 'skilled' work and nothing will be clear until 2007 or so.

That kind of information (state government criteria for STNI sponsorship
for SIR visa holders) is not on the DIMIA website.

This is something that all potential SIR visa holders should keep in
mind (IMHO, at least). As how i see it, the thing that discourages me
about this SIR visa is that if I take it up, for the next 2/3 years, I
will have to be hooked on to DIMIA websites and this forum all the time
to see if there are any new developments, changes in law etc etc..
When you move into another country and start working, you would be
looking forward to building a career and making progress in your
profession. However, with the SIR visa, the sword is always hanging
above your head..

you're right about that, however, it is the only way in for many of us.
the way we see it is the Govt is desperate to buile rural economies and
if you are
contributing to their aims, surely it would be foolish of them to eject
you at the end of two/four years?

Yeah, I wish it comes true. I mean, you relocate to a different country,
live in a regional area, just to be told later to move out -will be
heartbreaking. I wish DIMIA would come out with a more concrete stand on
what will happen to those who don't find skilled work etc etc..and not
just mentioning a few visa categories...as pathways..
