Default Travel to UK with expired passport

Is it possible to travel to UK with expired passport and valid visa?

My
wife is Bulgarian. Her passport expired, but she has a valid UK visa
until 2006. Wa want to travel from New York to London. As she is a green
card holder she can leave and enter US with expired passport and valid
green card.

But, can she enter and leave UK with expired passport and
still valid UK visa in that expired passport?

Thanks for any help

will be
tricky. if passport is not machine readable, it possible as they dont
scrutinise passport dates.

on the other hand, it depends on the purpose
of the trip. if its an emergency, she'll get through.

Actually this will not be very likely since the UK immigration scandals
of late. Contact the nearest UK consulate for advice.

You have
to worry about the airline even boarding her with the expired passport.
I know if an airline delivered a tourist to the US with an expired
passport, they would be fined several thousand dollars and the person
would be refused.

I'm not an expert on UK immigration law, so you
should ask their
consulate.

With greencard, she can apply for travel document, doesn't she? I
thought that one would not need passport then.

The related question would be: Where is it possible to travel with
valid green card and expired passport - or with the green card only?

I
have heard that green card is a valid travel document for Canada. But
not for Europe.

Which kind of travel documents or temporary travel
documents may be requested if someone has the green card?

Our problem
is that we need to travel very soon. For the new passport we will need
to wait 6 months.

There's no way it should take anything like that long to get a UK passport
from DC. Is you passport from a different country?

I already said that it is Bulgarian passport. But, the origin is of no
importance.

The key question remains: How to travel with expired
passport and valid visa.

What happens if someone loses his passport. I
believe that every country has some temporary documents allowing the
entry. In the USA there is a "boarding letter" allowing you to come to
USA even if you are missing some personal documents.

What about UK?

OP stated that his wife is Bulgarian.

You need to contact the British Embassy, as has been already told to
you.

The airlines will refuse to allow you to board without valid travel
documents. An expired passport is NOT a valid travel document. The
fact that it has a visa in it, is not relevent. You MUST get valid
travel documents of some kind.
