Default Travel time between Chiang Mai to Mae Hong Son?

Hello,

My wife and I are spending a few days in Chiang Mai in December, and
we are thinking of visiting Mae Hong Son. What is the travel time by
bus? Is it a safe area to visit(there was a schoolbus shooting, as
well as border shootings between Thailand and Burma last year)?

Thanks!

I was there early last year. Never did I feel unsafe there (in fact the
whole Thailand). Buses from Chiang Mai to Mae Hong Son is about 7-8 hours
if I'm right. It's an OK trip.

I have only done this trip while driving myself with a 4x4. It is a
beautiful journey and we stopped overnight at PAI. Pay attention that
you need warm clothes at night. The temperature may drop as low as 10
C. It is true that there have been some problems in that area but it
is probably more dangerous to cross the street in any town in Europe
or the USA than travelling in that region. To return to Chiang Mai you
can take the loop via Mae Sariang. Beautiful scenery . Avoid driving
at nigth as you are in a region close to the border of Myanmar.
