Travel as F1 beofre filing AOS
Has anyone traveled on their F1 status before filing for AOS? I just
got merried 2 weeks ago and I had plnned a trip home in July. We are
not filing any AOS papers util next year because we do not have any
money. Has anyone traveled? My F1 visa is good until 2007 amd I have
been in status all the time, so I really do not see an issue. Would
people at the customs know I got married if I do not tell them? What if
I do not plan to file for AOS and we plan to live in Europe? If anyone
has had a similar experience please let me know how it went.

You can't file for AOS because you have no money, and yet you seem to
have enough money to take a trip home in July. Your priorities seem a
bit skewed.

they didn't ask anything, as long as your visa is valid.

You forgot to add: other people's mileage may vary...
And the officer at the POE can ask any question related to the person's
status and intent that seems relevant, so just because YOU were not
asked doesn't actually mean much at all. And lying to an immigration
official is not recommended. (Not that I am suggesting that the OP would
consider doing so...)

Hi there,
I also entered US as F1 before applying for AOS, being already married.
They didn't asked me if I was married or anything like that. I was
traveling with my husband. We didn't go together to the passport control
(he went through the USC line, I went to the other line), and we filed
different customs forms. And as a precaution, I kept my wedding band and
engagement ring in my pocket. We asked an immigration attorney before
that trip and that is what she recommended.
Of course the officer may ask whatever he wants to. But seriously, I
don't think it is reasonable to expect such question on your port of
entry. If you enter with your F1 they will ask you the typical
questions: what are you studying, where, etc.
It would be different if you had to renew your F1 while being abroad in
your country. In that case, you would be asked if you have a boyfriend
or husband in the US.
You can go for a consultation with an immigration attorney for peace of
mind. It may depend on which country do you come from.

Re: Travel as F1 beofre filing AOS
Thank you very much for the advice. I know that I am puting myself in a
bit of an awkward situation. I hope all will turn out well with my
trip. And by the way, Ian the ticket I am using for my trip home is
actually free - I finally had anough mileage for a free trip and I had
booked the dates and everything month and months ago
Thanks all of you guys again

Firstly, just because YOU got in without any difficult questions asked
to you does not mean the same will be experienced by anyone else. The
fact that you hid evidence of your married status probably had a lot to
do with that. That, and you were lucky.
What would have happened if, upon noticing that you were not wearing a
wedding band, the POE officer had asked you if you were married? You
would only be able to answer one of two ways. If you answered, "No, I'm
not" then that would be lying. If you answered "Yes, I am" that might
have prompted him to ask where your husband was. What would you have
said then? Would you have lied and said he was in your home country?
While these questions weren't posed to you at the time, they very easily
could have. Having an F1 visa doesn't make you any less likely to be
considered a potential immigrant.
