Train from Paris to Bayeux
My parents are visiting Paris in Septemeber and are thinking about
visiting Normandy for a day. It looks like this subject has been
addressed many times, so sorry for another, but I searched through
Google and didn't see an answer to exactly what I was wondering. I
think they'd like to take a train from Paris to Bayeux, and then do
one of the tours that originated there (Normandy Sight Seeing Tours
http://www.d-daybeaches.com/ or Normandy Tours
http://www.adeauville.com/henri/hoteldelagare/eng/
were a couple of the ones they were looking at, seemed to have gotten
good feedback). So we were wondering about how much a train from
Paris to Bayeux costs, and is it fairly easy to take that train? As
in, are there transfers, does it go direct, from what station in
Paris, etc.?)
Also, if anybody has any info on tours that leave right from Paris but
are not expensive, or other tour companies in Normandy that you could
recommend other than the ones I mentioned, or any other information,
that would be appreciated.
Thanks a lot,
Andrea

Trains run from St Lazare station in Paris, and you need to change trains in
Caen. You can get timetables and fare information from www.sncf.com , click
on the english flag. Reservations are not required for those trains.

There are direct trains from Paris St Lazare station. E.g. dep. 9:08 arr.
11:14, travel time 2h06mins. Return tickets cost around 60 euro's (prices
vary according to time of booking and demand). No reservations necessary,
but advisable. This can be done trhough the SNCF website. You can pick your
own schedule at www.sncf.com (english available).

Re: Train from Paris to Bayeux
You can check trains but not book tickets at www.sncf.com, at least not in
North America. You can call their english info/booking line at
33.8.92.35.35.39 (outside of France) or 33.08... inside. Taking the train
is easy, but can be confusing for first-timers. There is an excellent
website explaining all kinds of european transportation at
http://www.enjoy-europe.com/hte/chap17/rail.htm

Depending, of course, upon the agility and physical condition of your
parents, I would urge that they take a train to Bayeux then rent a car and
give Normandy at least one night. Driving in that area is relatively easy
since it is somewhat rural and they can drive up and down and stop and
enjoy the local culture and scenery. It is a great part of France with well
marked roads and many bed and breakfast type places, many marked by signs on
the major roads.

Re: Train from Paris to Bayeux
You change trains in Caans. There are locals that can give you a guided
tour, with lots of local info. During D-day ceremonies in 2002 we took a
guided bus tour run by a local young man. Contact the madam at Hotel- Notre
Dame in Bayeux. She could give you the name of him or a similar guide.
May not be much more than renting a van price.
