TN Visa's and SSN - 40 day waiting period???

A friend and my uncle have both moved to the US recently to take jobs
with TN Visas issued at the Calgary airport.

Each moved to a different state, but both are having the exact same
problem where the SSN office is telling them that their I94
information wasn't entered into "the computer" and they have to wait
40 days to get their number. Has anyone had any experience with this
or know of a way to get around it?

Unfortunately, this is quite normal. If the wait is excessive, contacting
a Congressional Representative may be useful.

By the way, he can start working before having the SSN. I believe the
employer has up to 90 days to ask for the SSN. Of course, many employers
will not agree to that.
