Default Stonehenge "Inner Circle" Tours

in researching Stonehenge tours I find several folks offering "inner
circle" tours where you go see the stones either before or after the
general public.........they have early morning tours or late afternoon
tours.....what's this all about? It looks as if you can go on an
"inner circle" tour and you're allowed to walk up to the stones? But
if you go by yourself or on a regular tour you have to stay behind the
rope/line? Has anyone done an "inner circle" tour?

I haven't been on an inner circle tour, however, I have been first at
Stonehenge in the morning, and inside first, with only a very few other
visitors either behind me, or coming in as I was leaving. You can't go
inside the ropes, of course, but it is a very nice way to experience
Stonehenge, and cheaper than a tour.

Yes, I have. You have to arrange it through the English Heritage:

It costs a little more, but boy is it ever worth it to walk amongst the
stones. I went at dusk:

Me as well. It is well worth the minor expense involved. About the only
thing you can't do is climb on the stones - but that would be sacrilege,
would it not? :)

You get an hour or so either before or after normal opening hours, and have
to fill out a form attesting to your purpose (we put "spiritual" and it
wasn't an issue), promising you won't be there to film for financial gain,
etc. Simple enough, and the turnaround on the request could only have been
faster if they couriered the approval back.

I have also done the inner circle tour. I went on a tour with only 9 people,
and so the tour person organized it ahead of time. It was wonderful. And hour
with just we few roaming amongst the stones. You could touch, sit/recline
against, or just roam about, certainly not climb on, why would one? Perhaps,
simply because most people no longer have that access it what makes it so
special. But as a History buff especially of the eras that Stonehenge was
constructed, it was indeed a very special event. I recomend it. the cost is
minimal compared to the thrill.
Go for it.
