Default Step sibling sponsorship - subclass 139

Has anyone been sponsored by a step sibling for subclass 139? We are
looking for any info on this as we have been told that the step sibling
has to have a blood relation. My husband would like to be sponsored by
his step sister but they have no common parent.

Hi Trisha,

This comes up from time to time. In fact for a 139 you can just rely on
the dictionary definition, it's only with respect to the points test, eg
for a 138, that you have difficulties with blood ties and childhood
relationships. However I would strongly advise you to pay a migration
agent to confirm this for you in writing as there are many permutations
and obviously you'd hate to get it wrong by just relying on this forum.

I had a similar issue when considering a non-blood relative uncle as a
potential 139 sponsor. His wife had died and he'd re-married. I never
managed to confirm whether the lack of a blood relationship would be an
issue for DIMIA.... well in fact I phoned DIMIA and was told that it
shouldn't be a problem, but must admit that I didn't feel very confident
that the answer was completely water-tight.

thanks for that. Did you contact DIMIA in the UK or OZ? I didn't have
much luck with the UK office. What number did you call?

Hi there. I phoned a help desk in Australia. I don't have the number to
hand, but it's probably on the DIMIA website.

I would recommend that instead of trying to contact DIMIA, you take
George's advice and hire a good migration agent to deal with your case.
