Default SSN for filing taxes and driver's license??

I haven't filed my EAD yet. But I need a SSN so my husband can file
taxes and so that I can get a driver's license. I don't actually need
it to for work as yet. Can I get a SSN just for that purpose.

I'm
asking because as I understand it, it can take quite a while for my EAD
to be processed. So it seems pointless to wait around for my EAD when I
actually only need an SSN.

Thanks

CB

If you haven't yet applied
for an SS number, you could apply for an ITIN number from the IRS, this
will allow you to file taxes and open bank accounts etc. Won't help with
drivers license (tho this may soon change in CA). I believe if you don't
have an SS or ITIN number when you file taxes, IRS will give you a temp
ID number to keep track of you anyway.

Thanks J. Hubby had
hoped not to have to get an ITIN if possible. Good to know that I may
not need either for tax purposes. Will get him to look into that.

Changes to the drivers license laws are extremely unlikely to change.

It's an SSN, an ITIN or nothing. There's no temp Id.

Andy.

CB,

What is hubby's problem with an ITIN?

The procedure for obtaining
an ITIN has changed very recently. One no longer has to have the ITIN
before they can file a tax return. Indeed, now one can only apply by
sending the application along with a tax return.

See the INS web site
for details.

Thanks Jeff. I've done a bit of
looking around and it appears that I can't apply for an ITIN if I am
eligible for a SS. Do I qualify as eligible? As in I can get one
eventually?

Here's the form:

fill/fw7.pdf[/url]

Any input would be appreciated.

Hi!!!
I was/am kind of in
the same situation. To get the ITIN number, you need to fill out a W-7
form, and attach it to the tax return (and don't forget to sign the
original tax return as well). Here in Portland it was actually possible
for me to go to the IRS office in person, but I believe that that is not
possible in California.
Regarding the dirvers license I can say ( since
my husband and me were living in California before): go to your local
DMV office, and explain the situation to them. They will give you some
paperwork, with which you are supposed to go to your local SSA office.
In my case the SSA directly needed to send some kind of a waiver to the
DMV (but I have read from other people before, that they needed to bring
that paperwork sent to THEM by the SSA to the DMV) giving me permission
to get a drivers license without a social security number. First (after
taking the tests) I just got a piece of paper telling, that I was
allowed to drive for three months.... but before that period of time was
over, I got my "real drivers license" in the mail.
Therefore it was no
problem for me here in Oregon to turn my california license into an
oregon one.
Good luck with everything!!!!

Diana

CB,

You're a K3 right? You can't get a SS# without having EA. Do you
have EA?

For tax purposes you can probably file a W-7 form.

Are they changing it in California?
