Default Sponsor and residency

Just trying to clear something up here.
If someone is acting as a sponsor, do they just need to be a permanent
resident, and aren't tied to how long they have been permanent?

ie, if my bro moved out 6months ago as a perm, is he valid immediately
as a sponsor?

Tahnks!

Yes, someone on a PR visa can sponsor you and theres no requirement for
how long they've been there (for a 138 anyway!).

This is correct for a 138 visa. Sponsor needs only to be living in
Australia. As long as someone else can do the Assurance of Support.

Remember also for 138 - special rules if sponsor lives in or near
Sydney.

Other visas, like parent visas, do usually require the sponsor to be
"settled" (2 years residence).

This causes lots of confusion and even some migration agents and front-
line DIMA officers don't fully understand the rules.

Tahnks for the confirmation...this was exactly the reason I wanted to
make sure I was right in my thinking!

On the subject of sponsors....if we got an assuror, is it possible to
change assurors half way through the 2 years period, or is it stuck? I
ask, as our first and possibly only option may be moving back to the UK
sometime in 2008!
