South Auckland - Is it really like in 'Once were warriors'????!
My wife and I are worried - we are moving from the UK to South Auckland
for a new job in a few months.
We've just watched the film 'Once were Warriors' at the recommendation
of friends. It paints a pretty horrific picture of South Auckland - is
it really like that???
thanks

Whereabouts in South Auckland are you moving to i.e. Otara, Manurewa,
Papakura, Pukekohe, Papatoetoe, Clendon, Manuaka etc etc etc.....
South Auckland does have a Polynesian population i.e. Maori, Samoan,
Tongan, etc but it also has 'whities'.
Overall, Auckland has a large immigrant population - I have read
several reports over the past months stating that downtown Auckland is
'asian'.
I guess you could say if you believe everything you see on tv or in
movies, then you should not consider moving anywhere outside of your
present 'comfort zone'.

Re: South Auckland - Is it really like in 'Once were warriors'????!
"South Auckland" covers an area bigger than most english cities. There may
be a few streets in the west of the city may be a little like the film
(perhaps parts of Clendon) but everywhere is totally different. In the east
your biggest problem is likely to be "keeping up with Joneses", or more
likely the Wongs or Coetzees.
In some of the eastern schools, most pupils in their last year have cars,
and a six cylinder is considered "normal", but a BMW 318 or Audi A4 would be
"acceptable".
Manukau City (which covers most of this area) has citzerns from 134
countries.

Ozzy friends by any chance? ;-)
1) It's a *film*.
2) The film was a long time ago.
3) What if you were a NZlander and just watched "Scum" or "A very British
coup"? Hmm... it's along list if you want to go down that road.

You *did* visit Auckland before deciding to move there didn't you?

How about stopping trolling the various newsgroups basically asking
the same question which you have been doing since earlier this year
[as well as jobs in Canada, the Caymans.]
Your name was familar so I did a check on Google - you are already in
Australia.......
As I stated in reply on another newsgroup, why don't you buy a cheap
ticket and fly over to Auckland and check it out for yourself?

Re: South Auckland - Is it really like in 'Once were warriors'????!
i think its perfectly reasonable to ask questions about a place you
plan to move in advance to moving, don't you?. I can't really
understand why you are so hurt/upset by someone asking such questions.
I'm flying to auckland at the end of next month to check it out but
would like an idea of areas to look at in terms of
accmodations/commuting etc beforehand.

Hurt/upset by you asking question?
Come on - for a doctor you don't appear to have it altogether.
You've been asking basically the same questions over several ng's for
nearly a year. You have been given a lot of good advice in that
period most of which appears to have gone in one ear and out the
other.
Not only that, you were asked not to post to a travel ng [the Charter
of which clearly states the ng was not for immigration and living] but
continued to do so.
So please do spend the couple of days you are planning in South
Auckland sussing out the area for yourself.
Frankly, I would be extremely surprised if you moved there.
Cath
BTW I once lived in South Auckland and like others have told you
elsewhere 'I survived'.

To ask questions yes, but to base those questions on the views of a film
puts your credibility at risk to say the least. Would you care to tell us
where you are practicing medicine at the moment as I need to ensure I never
need to make a call? Na, thought not.
