Hi Sheila / Kim
As George says, if you have PR any Australia born children will be
Australians from birth, even if you never take citizenship.
Taking citizenship is optional, although there are some disadvantages if
you don't. And while you're not a citizen there's always the risk of
losing your PR, eg for living too long outside Australia. This happens
to hundreds (if not thousands) of PRs every year.
You can become an Australian citizen after 2 years resident in Australia
as a PR - is there a reason you don't want to take citizenship?
Depending on the law of your home country, you may be able to have dual
citizenship.
