Default Rome, Florence, Venice on weekends?

I will go to Italy for 12 days near the end of september (with only one
weekend at the middle).
I plan to go to Rome, Florence and Venice and I am not sure which one will
get the weekend.

Is there any of them I should definitively avoid on weekends?
or
Is there any of them that is the best candidate for the weekend?

Thanks!

Steven

Do NOT go to Venice on a weekend. Rome and Florence are both big cities
and can absorb weekend travelers but Venice is small and overrun with
tourists. Weekends just add to the mob scene. I always stay IN the heart
of Venice because it empties out at sunset and then you really get to
see it.

Enjoy your trip-

Definitely Rome on weekends.

Most Romans will be outside town, so you will have less cars around,
less traffic.

Add to that a more lively nightlife.

I would say that Florence is more overrun with visitors than Venice
is. I would avoid both on the weekend. Rome is better at absorbing
crowds. However, I would say Rome needs more than two days. With such
a short time, I would give Venice and Florence each two full days
(three nights) and spend the rest of the time in Rome, with maybe a
day trip to some Umbrian hill town, such as Orvieto or Assisi.

During the summer, a sizable percentage of Florentines go to a summer
home for the weekend, so actually Sunday is the only day of the week
when it is not difficult to find a parking. The tourist crowd is always
there, of course, but locals do not contribute.

I suggest you Rome or Florence in a week end, Venice needs more days.

For example, in a weekend you can visit in Rome: the Vatican (but not
also the vatican museum), the Forum Romanum, the Colosseum, Trevi
Fountain, Piazza di Spagna without problem.

It seems Rome's the winner for the weekend (plus 3 more days).
The remaining 7 days I will spend them in venice and florence
(weekend-free).

Thanks everyone!

I missed the beginning of the thread, but if the weekend comes in
the middle of a 12-day trip, putting Rome between Florence and
Venice means extra travel time, and you might want to reconsider
that decision. If it were me, I'd plan a itinerary either

1. flying to Rome and spending the time Rome-Florence-Venice,
then flying home from Venice or Milan,

or

2. flying to Milan or Venice, then spending the time
Venice-Florence-Rome, before flying home from Rome.

In my view, minimizing travel time is more important than where
you spend the weekend.

was just in florence at a weekend and it was utterly insane. have been
there before several times and it's been busy, but it was almost too
much this time. we were thrilled that we were staying in fiesole and
able to escape the crowds!
