Retaining of Citizenship
Dear Group,
My wfie and I are both Canadian citizens born outside Canada and have
two children born in Canada. My wife is now pregnant and will be
having a new baby soon who will be born outside Canada. My question is
the following:
1- Does this child need to apply to retain his/her citizenship by the
age of 28 or does the citizenship retention
law applies only to the second generation and beyond (i.e., the
children of my children, etc.)
Some web sites are saying that our "to-be" child needs to apply to
retain his/her citizenship by the age of 28 while other web sites are
specifically talking about the second generation only. Here is the
what I came across over the Internet:
"The one exception is section 8 of the Citizenship Act which applies
to Canadians born outside Canada to a Canadian parent who also
acquired Canadian citizenship by birth outside to a Canadian parent.
Such persons lose Canadian citizenship at age 28 unless they have
established specific ties to Canada and applied to retain Canadian
citizenship."
Can you please advise.
Thanks,
George Nicola
