Default regarding SS numbers & Drivers Licenses

I went to my nearby BMV/DMV.

I asked what was required for a License & what for a Learner's Permit
for someone over 18. (Their website only gives info for Learner's
Permits for those under 18.)

When she got the point about the SS#, I explained how that would be a
problem because he wouldn't be eligible for one until recieving his EAD
which could take 3 months or longer.

She said there was a form he could fill out if that was the case.

Looking at the info sheet she gave me, it says, "If the applicant does
not have a SS#, the applicant mush complete the BMV Social Security
Affidavit."

It did NOT inclue this information on the website. I am glad I went in
and spoke to someone.

I know that states vary on requirements, but I thought some other
states may be like this also, so I wanted to post this as an idea for
those who've done their web-research (like I did) and found info that
their same kind of info that I found.

The Form that SSA gives you if aren't eligible to be assigned an SSN or
issued a card is a SSA-L676. Not sure if that's what you need. From what
you are saying, it sounds like DMV has some form of their own that you
either need to take to SSA or complete on your own.

Is this Indiana?

You don't need an EAD to get an SSN.

Somebody please correct me if i'm wrong...but I was thinking....isn't is
possible just for your fiancee/husband to obtain a International
Driver's License (I think that's what it's called), it is used for when
someone is going on vacation to another country and they are eligible to
drive with their temporary international driver's license. I believe
though that it is only good for 1 year. I know that when my husband
came to visit me a couple of months ago, he obtained one from Spain, and
it is acceptable here in the states as a driver's license. Wouldn't
this be a solution? And then when you finally do get your Social
Security number, go and apply for a U.S. driver's license?

Like I said before, if i'm wrong somebody please correct me. Thanks.

Lily,

    > Lily,

This is what I used to do but when I forgot my international drivers
licence once I went and enquired at a police station in WI, USA as to
whether my Irish licence was okay to use and they told me my Irish
licence was fine to use if I was just visiting for a short period.
Personally I think the average cop in the US would give you more hassel
over an international drivers licence (a stamp on a piece of paper in
IRL's case ) than the actual IRL one !.

In regards to moving to the US. Does anyone know if you can simply apply
for an american drivers licence given you aleady have a european one or
do you have to go through the test again ??

I don't know how Ireland does their International Driver's License, but
I know the one my husband got from Spain is an actual booklet, where it
lists a whole bunch of countries where the International Driver's
license is acceptable.

Anyways, it was just a thought?

Lily,

    > Lily,

okay stamp on a piece of paper might be a bit of an exaduration, it is
also a small booket. However I do think his spanish drivers licence
would also be acceptable to get a hire car, as when you book a car on-
line/in person for the states they do not ask where your licence is from
merely do you have one and for how long

I emailed MA about getting a Driver's Licence. They told me that the
police don't like the International Licence and it generates a lot of
queries for them to deal with. In MA I can use my English licence
for a year.

SSN isn't a requirement in MA but proof of residence is.

Do you happen to know if it is possible to apply for a permanent
american drivers licence upon entering the US with Visa based on you
having a European one ?
