Received PR visa, landing shortly
After a long process (application for PR visa as skilled worker submitted
March 2004, AOR received May 2004, notified of interview July 2005,
interviewed October 2005, notified of visa January 2006, received visa
February 2006), I am going to be immigrating to Canada from the US. I would
like to land officially next week and enter at Niagara Falls. Initially I
will be staying with friends in the GTA and finding permanent living
arrangements. I intend to bring only what fits in my car on that trip. I
am aware of the B4 form both for personal effects arriving with me and those
to follow.
My questions concern both my car and the fact that I am likely to be moving
over a period of a couple of months. I would like to return to my current
home in the US several times and move in stages (it's only a little more
than a two-hour drive). Will I have any problem bringing my car (of course
there were never any questions when I was a visitor) if I tell them I will
not ultimately import it (I plan on selling it in the US before my final
move and buying a new car in Canada)? Additionally, will there be any
problem re-entering Canada if I make several return trips to the US before I
am totally moved?

Re: Received PR visa, landing shortly
You have to spend at least 2 years in the coming 5 years to get your
passport and if u travelled to US and stayed for more than 6 monthes
with no returns in between to canada you will lose ur PR.

I fully realize the length of residency requirements. My questions concern
the first two months or so while I am in the process of moving. As I said,
I would like to move in three or four stages (for one thing, it saves me
having to rent a truck). I am wondering if I will have any problem with
multiple entries to Canada during that time. After that, I intend to live,
work and remain in Canada except for occasional (perhaps five or six times a
year) visits to the US.

" " Are you sure about the 6 month requirement. I
thought under the new rules, you can stay outside as much as you want
during the first three years.
Bill as far as I know you can have multiple entries as long as you have
your PR card. If you don't have your PR card I believe you have to
apply for something like a resident entry permit or something. ( I am
not really sure about this so I hope one of the experts would clear
both these issues for us.)

The PR card is needed for re-entering Canada via public common carrier
(plane, train, bus, boat, etc). It is not needed if you re-enter via car
(obviously only at the US border). I intend to apply for the PR card as
soon as I legally land.
My questions continue to concern whether I can move in three or four trips,
and whether I will face any problems with the fact I will be using my car
for the trips but not ultimately importing it into Canada.

Re: Received PR visa, landing shortly
I am curious about this too. I am landing in June myself. I am going to
send an email to the lawyer who handled my application with this
question. I will update you when I hear back from them.

No more 6 month rule. Residence obligation for permanent residents is
explained here:
http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/newcomer/res-oblig.html
Time for Canadian citizenship is 3 years in 4, not 2 years in 5. The rules
for citizenship are not the same as those for keeping PR

"A couple of months" is kind of dodgy. If you have established a residence
in Ontario, the province might insist that you register your car there after
a certain period of time (like the way you must change your driver's license
after 60 days), which could be quite sticky as you have not in fact exported
it from the US. I don't think the problem is at the border per se. However I
am not an expert and do not know anyone who has tried the scheme you
outline.

"A couple of months" is the maximum. If the requirement is 60 days, I can
easily fulfill that. I'm not trying to evade the law. I just want to
ensure that I will be allowed to re-enter and bring my car with me for
several trips after landing without having to officially import it before I
sell it in the US.
