Might depend on what the particular bank wants you to have. For a
non-interest-bearing account maybe nothing, since there will be no
earnings to report to the IRS. More likely, though, they will require
either a SSN or an ITIN. For an interest-bearing account you will
definitely require either a SSN or an ITIN since there may be earnings
to report.
There's no reason why you should have to be married to have
an account in your own name.
