I am planning on going to Australia at the end of June. I am at the
final stage of a skilled independent application and my meds and pc were
sent begining of May requested.

It would be nice to receive my PR
before I go but I think it's unlikely and I will need an ETA, do I need
to inform DIMIA that I plan to get an ETA and if so how early should I
contact them to let them know?

cheers

Julian

Youve got to got to
got to inform them, not too sure of then the ins and out of it but your
PR visa could be cancelled out by your holiday visa so you must let them
know, one of the experts on this forum will tell you more but basically
DONT GO INTO OZ without letting DIMIA know immediately.

From how I understand it, it's an OFFSHORE VISA. That
means you can't be in the country when they issue it or it is invalid.

I'm sure you wouldn't want that to happen now would you?

One visa can cancel the other out, cos you can only hold
one at a time, so yes, emphatically 9 !!!) let DIMIA know!

I am visiting Oz in November by which time I hope to have submitted my
application for pr but it is likely to be months off being granted. Will
I need to inform the DIMIA about my holiday?

OK so i'll definately inform
them, how soon should i do it, i don't want to delay my grant as I may
have a job resting on getting it sooner rather than later, but
conversely I don't want to receive the grant too late to get my passport
stamped and back in time to go and an ETA could cancel it.

I recall reading on
this Forum that ETA visas don't cancel PR. Even if yours in an offshore
visa you can validate anywhere else but in OZ. I would simply go on an
ETA and just inform DIMIA that you will be down under between such and
such dates so that they dont issue the visa while you are there.
dont
stress!

AND ENJOY THE HOLIDAY!!!!

Definitely
let DIMIA know of your travel plans... you never know, it could give
them an incentive to grant your visa quicker :)

Don't bet on that one sadly.

To the OP:

Naturally, Australia reserves the right to refuse
admission to anyone they like. The reality is that they denied entry to
1100 or so people out of several million who were let in. DIMIA's
website has the cold hard facts.

But do tell DIMIA what your plans are.

Since you've applied for an offshore visa, a day trip to Wellington or
Port Moresby (if you're adventurous) is all that's needed to a) get the
PR visa and b) null and void the ETA.

Maybe one day in the future, the
Migration Act will be amended to do away with the brainless requirement
to be offshore.

Geez, even the stuck up US grants PR visas from within
America. I should know, I got my spouse green card without ever leaving
the US.

Good luck.
