Provence & Cote d'Azur: expensive in August! :-(
I'm going to the French Riviera in August, but prices for hotels are crazy
(300 euro for 1 night, for 2 people in 3 star hotel)... Does anyone know
any places to stay that are more affordable (and still available ;) ?
I will be going by car, so I don't have to stay near the beach. A hotel 30
km (or even more) from the coastline is also fine for us.
Thanks a lot!
John

Don't take this the wrong way, but I don't think you tried very hard.
Try www.accorhotels.com which will give you a variety of hotels way
under that price, and with availability in August.

It seems that you are absolutely right. You see, I went to 3 travel
agencies and they gave me the guides with all the (expensive) hotels. I'm
not used to online booking, so maybe it's time to start doing that! I
noticed that some hotels on that site ever offer special Internet rates!
I suppose I can trust this site with my visa number?
Thanks!!!

call the hotel and negotiate, negotiate
They have a bad time this summer, much less tourists then expected
I will not be surprised if you got it under 100 Euros....

Re: Provence & Cote d'Azur: expensive in August! :-(
August is THE most expensive month, so deals can be hard to find. Remember
the traffic is also HORRENDOUS this time of the year, so a 30 km drive to
the beach means not going at all. You'd be better off taking the train,
though there aren't so many places to stay inland...it's fairly mountainous.
You could try Nice, staying in the city somewhere, and using local bus or
taxi to get around. It's also a convenient place to drive to anywhere else
from (though you can bet the Bas, Moyenne and Haut Corniche will all be
busy).

I've used them many times, for their Ibis, Etap and Formule 1 hotels.
Just remember that when you make a reservation, you'll have to cancel it
(usually by around 6pm on the day), or you will be charged.

Huh? Why would he have to cancel a reservation when he makes one?!

Is traffic really that bad? :-( I also going there in a few week for the
first time. Are there any parkings outside the cities (Nice, Cannes,
Saint-Tropez, ...) where you can take a bus to the centre? Any suggestions
would be greatly appreciated!
I'm already starting to loose my excitement of going by car... I thought it
would be convienient...

I meant, remember to cancel it if you don't intend to keep it.
Especially with complex itineraries, it's easy to forget such things.

Re: Provence & Cote d'Azur: expensive in August! :-(
I've only gone in September/October, but from what I've heard, yes, the
traffic is that bad. You can check the traffic at www.mappy.com (click on
"Road Info". Today they're showing red from Antibes to Monaco, but esp. in
the area of Nice. The rest is green, but remember, it's only July still.
Parking is marked on most city maps, but certainly on mappy and viamichelin,
when you zoom in on the city you're interested in.
