Default passports and re-entry to UK

we got a bit worried this morning, we were told that our kids would need
2 passports, an australian passport for entry to australia on our
impending validation trip and a british one to get back in to the UK.

as they are australian citizens (by descent) we thought we would just
get them an aussie passport each and be done with it, but our resident
know it all (nosey neighbour) tells us different, he reckons they would
need a visa for re-entry to britain if they tried to enter on aussie
passports.....is he right?

I think you need to establish how
visitors from Australia are treated by UK immigration? I know going to
Australia from the UK (for whatever reason) requires an Australian visa
on entry (or Australian passport). Are you or your partner UK
citizens/nationals?

Another question, how long have your kids been in
the UK and what do they currently have as UK documentation to either
allow them to stay or prove their nationality? Best idea is to turn up
in person at your local UK passport office (make an appointment first)
with ALL relevant documentation and simply get them UK passports based
upon (I am assuming) descent, if applicable. I would also follow up the
idea of getting them Australian passports too.

I think you need to
provide more comprehensive information about your
status/nationality/origins in the UK and whether or not your kids have a
valid claim to UK citizenship?

To answer your original question, I
would guess that your nosey neighbour MAY be right but check the UK
immigration laws first.

Hope this helps?

i agree get them two passports each and reduce any possibility of
hassles.

this is what my parents did with me and has given me the
freedom to move between places without any issues

There is another take on this. I am an Aussie with adult children.
They would love to have British passports as well as their Australian
passports so that they would have the option of working in the UK and
EU.

Hello

I am British by birth but have New Zealand and Canadian citizenship. I have
not used my British passport for about 12 years as it has it expired and
couldn't be bothered neknewing it.

I have entered the UK at various ports of entry for many years with my New
Zealand passport and have never had a problem. Of course you have to take
the 'Other Passports' line but since you have to wait for you luggage it
makes no difference even if EU passport holders pass throught immigration
quicker as you arrive after passing thougth immigration to see them
twiddling their thumbs waiting for their luggage.

Only once, a long time ago did an immigration officer ask me why I was not
travelling on a British passport and if I intended to work. Most of the
times I have entered it has been 'How long are you staying?' and 'What is
the purpose of your visit?' that is all. Sometimes the officer just stamps
the passport and waves me on, it depends.

Unless you intend to live in Europe or travel extensivly and often in Europe
then it really is not worth it in my view to have a EU passport if you spend
most of your time in Australia.

Why would an Aussie ever want to live in boring old Europe? Seems a bit back
to front to me.

WBB, I think your neighbour is
correct. (definately correct for adults, and almost certain it is the
same for kids)

If they have OZ passports only, your children will need
a visa to get back into UK.

Alternatively you can get Certificate of
Entilement of Right of Abode into their OZ passports which cancels the
need for a UK visa, but still leaves visa issues in the rest of Europe.

Simplest solution is to get them UK passports as well.

I'm assuming your kids are British citizens already (which will be the
case if the parents are British and they're UK born).

Don't worry about what your neighbour tells you. Their Australian
citizenship does not affect their British citizenship. There are many
urban myths concerning nationality.

The easiest solution is just for them to have both British and
Australian passports.

An alternative is to apply to the Home Office for them to have Right of
Abode (ROA) stamps in their Australian passports:
http://www.ind.homeoffice.gov.uk/def...sp?PageId=1370

This means they could use Australian passports to enter the UK without
encountering any issues with immigration officers who might otherwise
think they were planning to overstay (which isn't possible for a British
citizen, but without an ROA stamp or a British passport, they are not to
know that ... )

Right of Abode stamps are a lot cheaper to get in the UK than via the
High Commission in Canberra, but if they have British passports it's not
really necessary to have one.
