Usually the Passport Office return your old passport to you, with a bit
cut off the front cover.
Your visa should still be inside. However,
once you have your new passport you should try to get the visa re-
stamped in the new passport.
Otherwise you will not only face the
problem of always having to carry old passport (with visa) as well as
the new one, but also possible delays at check-in if airline staff don't
know that DIMIA are ok with this.
This problem is getting more
widespread since the requirement for electronic checking of visas by
airlines, as there will be no match in the system for your new passport.
DIMIA's policy clearly states that it's ok for someone to board an
Australia bound flight with a valid visa in an old passport (plus a new
valid passport) but some airline staff may delay you while they check
things directly with DIMIA in Australia. So leave plenty of time to check-
in if you don't get your visa restamped.
In general, you would have
made it a lot easier for yourself if you had renewed your passport
*before* you got your visa stamped.
