Default OT: Looking for a job.....

Hi

I'm sorry, but I have to just vent for a minute about this whole job
search situation. My husband has had has EAD now for about 2 months and
still cannot find a job. We have sent his resume to every graphic
design/computer related/media....you name it, company in the city. A
few have responded back stating they are not currently hiring when it
clearly states on their website that they are. There is literally no
one else to send a resume to.

I was very lucky and found a great job straight out of college, so I
have never had to deal with this type of frustration and neither has he.
He has excellent education and experience and had a great job in Germany
- and now this.....

It is really important that he can get something US web related on his
resume before we move to Washington, DC, where the job search will be
even more hectic.....

OK, thank you for listening, I had to complain for a minute so I do not
pull out my hair......

Kari

Hi Kari,

I'm sure you've thought of this....but has he tried (or is he able) to
do any type of freelance work or self-employment type work? (I know,
that opens up a whole new can of worms with the SSA and all
that..........)

Just a thought. Good luck in the search!

Yes, that has been a thought, but we're not sure if that will be of any
help when we move (which is in less than a year). Then his resume will
consist of non-related US experience and I'm not so sure if that is a
good thing. He does not have ANY experience in any other field besides
web design.

Kentuckians are rare 'round here.....

He has made a few contacts about freelance work, but nothing as of yet.
I was not aware there are SS issues when freelancing....

I hate to say this but networking is everthing in the US. Can he attend
some industry events locally and perhaps meet people there? Get into
contact with any Germans in the area.

Why and when are you moving to DC? I know a few web people here but the
market is very tight. Most jobs in government, which is a lengthly
process that I am not sure he is qualified for (legally).

It took my wife a while to find a job. Have you tried temp work?

Well, I'm not sure that there are, actually. Elly (Elenfair) had a
thread last week about EAD and self employment---perhaps it doesn't
apply to you since your husband already has his EAD. Mr. P. and I are
still trying to get some definitive answers on whether a person can run
his own business here without an EAD since he is his own employer.
Contacted a couple of lawyers in my area for a consult and so far no one
has called us back. That's what we get for contacting them during
Thanksgiving weekend!

I know from personal experience that self employed people are
responsible for paying self employment taxes and for contributing to SS.
My own little business was a hit or miss kind of thing in addition to my
regular job, so at tax time I simply turned in all the information
regarding my earnings and expenses and self employment tax and SS was
figured by my tax preparer.

I don't know if this confuses the issue or not. But perhaps something
to look into with your tax advisor if your husband does go the
freelance route?

Web work is an EXTREMELY difficult market right now... the market is
absolutely TERRIBLE for that. That's the unfortunate part of it all.
This is coming from a guy who was a web developer for the last 6-8 years
of his life. Keep plugging away though, something will come up
eventually. It took me about 6 months to get my great job that I have
now. Literally sent out 100s if not a 1000 resumes, and talked to every
Recruiter imagineable.

As for the companies that say they are not hiring, yet their website say
they are... this is a notorious thing to do for companies in the
tech/web field... they may not actually be hiring, but they love to
collect resumes for when they do, as then they can look back at those
resumes and start quicker then if they had to start from scratch on a
hiring campaign. I was a principal in a tech/web firm in Canada, and
every company I know/worked with did it the same way.

But again, keep pushing out those resumes, it will eventually happen.
Just realize the market today is not great, but it is getting better.
Also, as others have mentioned, freelance work is a great way to start
over here. Talk to every business in your neighborhood that doesn't
have a website, do some for free, do anything just to get some work here
in the US. Maybe even volunteer somewhere around here to get that part
of his resume going... show's his commitment to work, etc. It is never
a bad thing!

Good luck.

Sean

Hi DCMark

We have found a German and few other people who work in the IT community
here in Louisville who are trying to help us out, but there is only so
much you can do if no one is hiring.

I work for the Census Bureau and am being transferred after my survey is
finished. The office is actually in Maryland, but we will be living in
either Alexandria or DC. The majority of federal jobs require
citizenship, but they hire a lot of contractors too.

I just started looking into temp./job placement type work today....
