Default Open University & ACS

Hi Everyone,

I have read through many posts and the forum is a great source of
advice.

I was wondering if someone could have a look at my current situation and
offer advice on whether it is worth me studying to get a masters degree.

Profile:
27 yrs old
Cisco Network Designer
3 years experience in the UK
BSC Engineering
CCNA, CCDP

I have had a look on the SOL the only IT jobs I see available are on the
ACS assessment list. Also even if a 40 point role were there I don't
think I would get the 120 requried.

Now from my research I have found out that my degree doesn't count for
ACS as it is not a major in computing, I think it would really struggle
to even be a minor in computing as it was mainly civil engineering.

So I am considering doing a post graduate diploma/Masters in computing.
I can get this finished in 18 months if I work flat out. The problem is
this will have to be via Open University as I don't have time/ can't
afford to leave work to do it.

My questions are would the ACS recognise the grad diploma (it is
recognised by the British computer society)

Does this qualify me for Group A?

I'm unclear about the whole, full time part time pro rata semesters
etc (completely alien way of talking about schools..what happened
to terms?!)

I need to get it this quickly or else I will be over 30 and lose another
5 points, which I'll have to find from somewhere.

I do have other experience about 5 in total as a web developer but it
was for smaller firms who have mainly fallen by the wayside and to
find detailed references is going to be near impossible, so RPL is out
as well I think.

Any advice is gratefully received. It is going to cost a fair bit and be
hard work, but I'm desperate for my partner and I to move out before we
start a family

Thanks in advance

Stram

Hi Stram,

I don't see any problem with an OU qualification being accepted by ACS
but I'd recommend you take the whole story to an agent to make sure that
there isn't an easier way.

Cheers,

Is your degree accredited by the Engineering Council - UK for Chartered
Engineer purposes? If so, you may be able to get an Engineers Australia
assessment as an engineer, under the Washington Accord.

Easier way may be to go get an MCSE. For Group B you only need 6 years
of experience. You still may be able to get assesed positively if you
can prove experience at those other companies by way of statutory
declarations of past co-workers, or other sources. You only need to
try I think you could do an MCSE and the classes you mention at the
same time so you have a backup plan.
