O/T: Renewing Florida driver's license
Hi, all.
My current situation is:
Applied for AOS in Miami April
2003. Still waiting for that warm place called Hell to freeze over
before I see our interview appointment in the mail.....:p
Current 1
year EAD expires in June.
Filed renewal Feb 20th 2004. Still waiting
for approval.
Scheduled interim EAD appointment at Miami for May 20th
2004. (Can't get time off work after this date due to other employee
vacations as well as my own, etc)
My Florida driver's license expires
the same day as my EAD. I called the DMV a few days ago, and asked what
I need to bring with me to renew it. I also asked what I should do in
the event that my 1 yr EAD renewal isn't approved by then. She told me I
just need to bring my current license and my EAD renewal NOA with
biometrics stamp on it, and that will be fine. All they need to see is
proof that I filed, and they'll send my D/L renewal off to Tallahassee
to get the verification, as they did before. This doesn't sound right to
me. I thought they were more strict than that, and wanted to see the
actual EAD card.
Has anyone had an experience similar to mine before?
With my vivid imagination and negative attitude toward USCIS, I can see
all kinds of problems cropping up. ie, I have to get an interim EAD, I
take my EAD NOA to the DMV, they won't accept just that, so they want to
see the interim, and my license is only valid for the duration of the
interim, etc, etc, etc..............(twitch, twitch) Any info would be
great.

How and when did you get the DL in the first place?
We have filed AP, AOS and EAD and have received NOA 1. When we tried to
get a DL before the K-1 expired we where told it couldn't be done until
we (she) had a visa that was valid for longer.
Thanks.

I was told a similar thing. They
said I had to have an I-94 that was valid for more than 30 days, or a
work permit. I had to wait until I had my 1 yr EAD in my greasy paws
before I could take my test. That's why I thought it was weird when she
said I only need the NOA for my renewal.
I filed AOS in
April 2003, and got my license in June 2003.

Thanks for the quick reply.
How did you get the license two months after you applied for AOS?
Now I'm confused. :) Did you just take the NOA to DHSMV?
My wife would really like to get her license and I would really like to
add her to my insurance.
Thanks again.

For my initial license, I tried to get insured on Corey's policy, but
they told me they couldn't insure me without a license. I stupidly
waited until I had less than 30 days on my I-94 to go for my test, and
DMV told me I had to have either a valid (for more than 30 days) I-94 or
permanent EAD (I only had the temp 90 day work stamp). I arrived in the
US at the end of Jan 2003, and filed AOS in April 2003.
USCIS took 80
days to issue a 1 yr EAD, so I went to the DMV a couple of days after
that, and I was allowed to take my test.
For my DL renewal, I was told
to just bring my EAD renewal NOA1 down, as well as my current license,
and that's all they need.

Re: O/T: Renewing Florida driver's license
Hi Kate,
I don't know about Florida....but in Arizona, we got
Sadegh's AZ state ID (not his license yet) with his 90-day temp EAD
card. Of course, it expires July 20th along with his temp EAD. When
I asked what to do after that, the answer was to just bring in proof
of FILING for the 1-year EAD card (not the card itself), and they will
renew his State ID. He might know enough English to pass the test by
then, too! LOL

Thanks for that info, Rene! ;) I know Florida isn't Arizona, but at
least I know that what the lady told me about the NOA isn't totally
unheard of, and she probably was right. Thanks again!

Hi! Our case similarities are
quite spooky! ;)
I decided to change my interim appt. If I go by the
received date of Feb 20th, May 20th will be day 91, but if Miami get a
bee in their bonnet and decide to go by the notice date which is Feb
23rd (don't know if that's what they will do, but I'm not willing to
take the chance and waste a precious vacation day. :(), then I'll only
be on day 87, therefore, not eligible for the interim for another few
days. :(
Who knows, a miracle may occur, fish may fall from the sky,
and by the time I need to go for the interim, my app will be
approved!!! ;)
