Hi,
I am no expert (and I am sure one will be along soon), but if you are an
only child thats a good thing, balance of family only works if theres
more than one child. You can get your mum to apply for a parents visa
once you have been a PR for 2 years, this is the route my parents will
take as they dont have any money either. There is a huge waiting list
though, about 5 years or more. Has she no home to sell? If that was
worth enough she could qualify for contributory parents visa or
retirement visa. Retirement visa only lasts for 4 years, and is
renewable as long as conditions are met, cont. parents has a fee that is
paid to the Aus government to cover any expenses that is incurred.
Cherry
As I said, I am no expert, this is just a rough idea of the situation.

She does have a home to sell but its only worth about £180k.

Hi,
I am not sure of the exact amounts for retirement visa, but I know its
cheaper amount if they have a child in Aus (which your mum would), plus
they have to have a good pension.
Contributory Parents Visa needs about £10,000, plus a bond I think. I
will have a look and get back to you.

Hi,
Contributory parent visa is £10,000 upfront (or you can split that
payment over 2 years) and then a bond is payable of 10,000 aus dollars
which is paid back after 10 years. Waiting list is not as bad as normal
parents visa.
Retirement visa, you have to be 55 or older, and the amount of money you
have to have is 180,000 AU dollars and a pension of 42,000 AU a year.

And of course the retirement visa is not permanent, 4 years at first
then renewed every 2 years after. DIMA have to be satisfied that all
criteria is still met each time. I think that your mum would be able to
work for 20 hours a week under the retirement visa, but no medicare can
be claimed so she would need medical insurance.
If my mum had money I would get her to apply for cont. parents, as
retirement visa seems unstable. Hope that helps, I am sure you can get
more info from migration agents or DIMAs website, or the AHC website.

That's the way we have gone - but check out all the conditions.
I believe I'm right in saying that for the CP visa the child must be an
Aussie citizen or a PR for two years minimum. So in your case you'd have
to wait a while unless she got a Retirement visa as a stopgap.

Re: Mum wants to come, how ?
Hi John,
Sounds like Cherry has basically answered your questions. Normal approach
in this situation would be to get mum here on the retirement visa if
possible and then convert to a parent visa application when you are
"settled", ie, lodging the application after the sponsor has been here for
two years in most cases.
Cheers
