There's nothing loyal about Israel. The country acts exclusively in its
own interests, and it's "loyalty" evaporates in any situation that
conflicts with those interests. Remember the USS Liberty.

Maybe, maybe not. Bernie's reaction was off the scale for what was
required to stop the assault. He could have just flashed his piece and
the heat would have been off.

Americans have a long and dark tradition of vigilante action...and just
about every time it's been resorted to in any noteworthy incident, it's
been a disaster. That's probably why most individuals as well as all
government types are against it. Bernie was out looking for trouble,
which is pretty much the hallmark of the vigilante. I tend to agree that
the eventual sanctions against him went too far, but I have little
sympathy for him.

The equally long and much brighter tradition of self defense includes much
larger doses of self control, forethought and restraint. Vigilantes
usually wind up in deep doo doo. Defenders, OTOH, are usually vindicated
and frequently rewarded.
