Default Meds - Blood Pressure

Hi, I recently signed up at a new gym and they took my blood pressure.
It came out as 140/90 and apparently this is slightly high. I was told a
similar thing a couple of years ago when I went for a minor op. Does
anyone know if this likely to cause me a problem when I go for my meds
in the new year?

Thanks

Neal

Is it white coat hypertension? I suffer from this. Taking your blood
pressure at home may reveal at lower rating. 140/90 is beginning of
borderline anyway. I think if it's controllable it's unlikely to cause
concern,

Hi Neal I didn't know I had a problem with my blood pressure until we
had the meds, talk about a panic!!!!!!!!!!
I just had to get a report from a cardiologist (who couldn't find
anything sinister thank god!) and then go to my GP for medication. It is
a bit inconvenient and costly (an extra 600 quid on the bill!!!) but
here we are in sunny (hot!!) Brissie 5 months later so don't worry.
There are a few things you can do to help bring it down (cut out
cafeine, take it easy on the booze, cut down salt intake etc). But I'm
sure if you are just borderline if you don't stress for the medicals it
may be ok on the day. Even if it is a little high don't worry it won"t
affect your chances of getting a visa.

Good luck.

When the panel doc/HSA refers you for hypertension at meds, the tests
are blood and urine for U&E (potassium/sodium levels in urine),
creatinine, and creatinine clearance - all connected to kidney function.
They are apparently keen to find out if the HBP is a secondary symptom
of kidney disease which costs $$$$$ in treatment (and makes you quite
undesirable to them).

Primary hypertension is controllable through medication and lifestyle
changes and probably doesn't concern them as much.

Does anyone know how long it takes to lower you blood pressure? I know
my blood pressure is a little higher than it should be and would like to
lower it before I go for the Meds, I was thinking of detoxing & keeping
fit for a couple of months before meds, would this be long enough?

We did 3 months - January - March, gym 3 times a week (just gentle
excercise) - no booze, and what really worked for us was cutting out
salt or salty foods from Diet and NO caffine, drink de caff. I had a
bit of a health scare with stress at work in Feb, my BP had gone upto
170/95 - but on the meds day it had dropped to ; 136/88.

Its also worth spending a tenner and buying one of those self monitoring
ones from Boots, it gives you some indication that your BP is on its way
down
