Default Medical Interview - Experiences?

Hi all,

I'll soon be booking an appointment at the London medical practice to have
my medical interview. I have to admit that I really don't enjoy setting
foot in a doctor's office, particularly if I don't know what to expect. Can
anyone offer some recent experiences so that I can have some idea as to what
to expect? I'm told it's changed some in the past few years (i.e. different
immunisations, more tests) so the more recent the better. Is it just a
quick blood test and X-Ray or should I be preparing to bend over and get the
latex glove treatment? How long are you in there for, and just how thorough
is a "thorough examination" in this case when you're a 24yr old male?

Thanks,
Alex

No, I doubt they're going to make you bend over! My experience may be a
little old for what you want--4 years--but I remember being nervous too.
I went in for my medical with my two kids and nothing happened that
embarrassed any of us. X-ray, blood test (least painful I've ever had!),
a look in the eyes, ears, breast check (won't apply to you!), and a feel
around the stomach. That was it at Doc. Phelan's, which is where I
assume you're going. I kept my pants on the whole time, which is what
may be worrying you, I guess. I remember getting myself all wound up
beforehand, but it was nothing. Whole load of people in there being
processed like cattle. Not a wonderful experience but not horrific
either. Good luck with your process!

Hi Alex,

Off topic of your question, but just because you mentioned your age....I
wanted to remind you to look into registering with the Selective Service
once you are in the USA. I dont' know what visa you're coming on, but
make sure you don't miss registering, as it will affect your process in
the long run.

Best Wishes,
Rene

Hi Scarlett,

Nope, no more Doc. Phelan's. They go somewhere else now, but the
process is the same from what I hear. Basically a blood test, x-ray,
and overall checkup.

Dont worry, there is nothing. 2 shots and simple medical checkup. Plus
skin test, blood test. That's all...
Questions so you'll be done in like 5 minutes that's it.

Good luck

Hi Rene,

I'm coming in on a K1 visa. What is the Selective Service and how will it
affect me?

Thanks,
Alex

Hi Rene & Scarlett,

I really hope you're right, as I don't relish the thought of having to get
starkers and let someone poke and prod me in the no-entry zones if you get
my drift. The details on the forms I received from the London Embassy says
"a thorough examination of extremeties and external genitalia". Here's
hoping it's still just the quick blood test X-ray and pat on the back! I
hope my fiancee realises she's the only person in the world I'd voluntarily
do all this for!

It has changed from Dr Phelan's office from the looks of things - the new
Dr's office is "Knightsbridge Doctors" on Basil St near Harvey Nichols, in
case anyone wanted to know. Seems that the procedure has changed as well -
I'm being asked to schedule an appointment for my medical exam ASAP, and it
says that it takes up to 4 days to courier the results to the Embassy. From
reading past experiences the medical appointment always seemed to be on the
same day as the interview, yet this is implying I'll need to make two
separate trips to London - one for the medical, then another later on for
the visa interview. :-(

Kind Regards,
Alex

FROM: http://www.sss.gov/inslink.htm

Federal law requires that men who are at least 18 years old, but not yet
26 years old, must be registered with Selective Service. This includes
all male non-citizens within these age limits who permanently reside in
the U.S. Men with "green cards" must register. Men living in the U.S.
without INS documentation (undocumented aliens) must also register. Men
cannot register after reaching age 26.

[...]

By registering with Selective Service, a man is not joining the U.S.
military. He is only telling the government where he may be contacted if
men must be called to serve in the military in a future national
emergency. Even in an emergency, not all men would be called, and not
all who are called would serve.

Hope that helps! It's only going to affect you if they bring back the
draft, and hey, they wouldn't do anything crazy like that, would they?

er...
