Default medical costs in Oz when having baby

We have got our Oz PR visa and have found out my wife is pregnant. With
the timing of things we are going to have to fly to Oz and have the baby
there in order to validate our visas.

If we apply for medicare upon
arrival (24 weeks term pregnancy), what medical costs are we likely to
have to incur, e.g. 25% of $xxx ? ... or does medicare cover us fully
for this sort of "treatment" ?

Can we get medical insureance to cover
these expenses, or will the premiums be prohibitively expensive as they
know we will be claiming almost immediately.

If you are Medicare eligible it's totally free in Public Hospitals!!

Home Births are most unusual in Australia. Registered Midwifes in private
practice are all but unknown (Liability Insurance issues are too potentially
destructive!).

Be aware that Airlines are reluctant to carry pregnant women within a
certain time of their likely delivery. You will need medical certificates
etc before they'll let you board - so be prepared, with certificates in
hand!

Good Luck!!

my understanding is that you can be a puiblic patient & all is covered
by medicare. There are a lot or great public maternity hospitals in NSW
- so am sure this would also be the case throughtout the rest of OZ.
You
could elect to go as a private patient in either a public or private
hospital in which case Medicare will pay 75 per cent of the Medicare
Schedule fee for services and procedures provided by the treating
practitioner. Some or all of the outstanding balance can be covered by
private health insurance. If your practitioner charges more than the
Schedule fee, you will have to pay any charges in excess of the
scheduled fee.

Here is a link to Medicare that should help, also one
other that i have found (am pregnant as well but we are having baby in
UK & then gping to OZ).
Hope this helps

Check with someone like George Lombard to see if you arent elegible for
the "Baby Bonus" in Oz, its $3,000 per kid born in the country but I am
unsure of the qualifying conditions.
