Default Long term visitor visa directly after Working Holiday Visa - is this possible?

Has anyone been able to get a long term visitor visa for 6 months
straight after their Working Holiday Visa without having to leave and
then return to Australia? My boyfriends WHV is due to expire shortly
and as I am in Australia on a student visa he wishes to stay with me
until my course finishes which would mean that he would need another
visa for the next 6 months. He would be able to show proof of funds
to support himself without having to work. If this is possible, is it
easy enough to organise this visa ourselves or would you suggest using
a migration agent. Please advise! Thank you for your replies.

I'd suggest getting some professional advice, as these queries can be
complex. Give IARC a ring, they should be able to point you in the
right direction - http://www.iarc.asn.au
