July Opera/Symphony (puzzled)
Hi,
I am obviously planning my European vacation and was a little miffed to
find that most major orchestras and operas are not running during the month
of July. Why is this? If major concerts and operas from the BPO and LSO
don't perform during this time, who does that you would recommend? I will
be in Berlin, Munich and London during the latter part of July what type of
classical concerts could I attend? TIA

Regular concert and opera season runs from autumn/fall to June. July-August
is holiday/vacation time for members, and occasionally there are music
festivals which they take part in. The most prestigious is perhaps Salzburg
Festival from end July to end August, and this year top orchestras like BPO
and VPO are performing. www.salzburgfestival.at but tickets are hard to
get/expensive for these (110 euro up).
In London you may want to attend the Promenade Concerts (The Prom) at Royal
Albert Hall. There are other music and opera festivals in Bayreuth,
Glyndebourne (both sell-out events), Verona and elsewhere. Also there are
performances by visiting orchestras.

The short answer is that the musicians are at music festivals or on
vacation.

In Berlin there are open-air concerts in the summer. Aida will be
presented on Museum Island on July 23-24, and there are several other
classical concerts. See the list at
http://www.berlin.de/eventkalender/
In Munich you are close to the famous Salzburg Festival (excellent and
expensive concerts and operas) which starts July 24.
In London the Proms in Royal Albert Hall begin in mid-July.

However, there are lots of secondary musical activities in Salzburg at
that time that are not part of the official festival, and these are
quite easy to get tickets for.

I don't know why you expected them to be performing in July. Concert
seasons the world over are in the winter months.
There are some summer music festivals that you might be able to find
but offhand I can't think of any in the places you mentions.

Tickets in Salzburg are very expensive, sometimes ridicolously
expensive; but in the last years, apart from the two or three top
symphony concerts and the traditional Jedermann, it looks like rarely
the performances are completely sold out.

Re: July Opera/Symphony (puzzled)
Well, you could take a side trip from Munich down to Verona and catch
any of several operas scheduled for the Arena in July. See:
http://www.arena.it/eng/arenaeng.urd/portal.show?c=1
It is about a four hour train ride from Munich to Verona (no train
change).

Re: July Opera/Symphony (puzzled)
Don't worry. Munich National Opera has a yearly opera festival
in the entire July. You can enjoy top quality performance there.
Tickets for some performances may be already sold out.
But you can always try your chances by showing a paper with
"Suche Karte" written, in the main entrance of the opera house.
Also some performances may be broadcast in front of the opera
house.

Re: July Opera/Symphony (puzzled)
Do not forget the Sun Festival in Cortona (in July and August), that has
several excellent artists appeearing this year, including Renee Fleming,
Nina Kortova, and Trio Solisti among others. Although this is more than
a couple hours train ride from Munich which was mentioned in the
original post.

Most opera companies and orchestras in the U.S. are "not running" during
the summer, either. Why should you think Europe would be any different?
(Especially when, as a general rule, Europeans are accustomed to more
vacation time than our measly two weeks a year?) There are, of course,
the many summer festivals, but the famous ones - Salzburg, Bayreuth,
Glyndebourne, etc. - are generally booked up well in advance. (Bayreuth
a couple of YEARS in advance, I think.)
