Default Job search without SIN

Greetings,

I believe it takes about 21 days to get the SIN card.
I am told that Canadian employers will not hire anyone without a SIN card
(even if you have applied for one).
This would mean that a new immigrant cannot get a job until they get the SIN
card.
That is almost a month wasted without any productive job search.

Is this true?

Thanks.

I doubt.

I know a friend who had an offer even though/when his PR application was
in progress.

It is true that in mighty USA #1 you need only 5-7 days to get SSN in some
cases! One more reason to go to USA #1.

Why don't you just shut-up?
Nobody I know has got their SSN in 5 days.
Mine took almost 3 weeks.
The average range is 2 - 4 weeks, sometimes longer.

It is about the same for the SIN card in Canada.

When you have nothing useful to contribute, keep you stupid trap shut.
If it makes you feel any better, let me tell you that you are succeeding in
your lifetime objective of being a genuine nuisance on this group.

If you have the proof of your landing and can say you applied for the SIN
card, you should have no problem in looking for work.

When I started working in Halifax I applied for a SIN card after I was
working for 10 days, at the HRDC office they gave me a SIN number and then I
received my card in the post in a week.

No this is not true, I was hired by a canadian company while still in
the UK. Once I arrived in Canada (without SIN yet) I applied, but until
it arrived the appropriate contributions went into some kind of holding
account, and were then attributed to the correct SIN later. I guess the
short answer is that it depends how much a company wants to employ you
how far they will inconvenience themselves. In general if you explain
that you are waiting for it to come through it should not be a problem,
in fact it is more likely to hold up your search for somewhere to live
than somewhere to work...remember to bring landlord references with you
if you can if you intend to rent (anywhere nice) at first.

It was interesting that after I became a PR my SIN changed again. While
I was on the work permit it began with a 9, which raised red flags
everytime I applied for credit. After PR granted the number changed and
credit was no problem.

Iain

"Let he who is without SIN cast the first stone"......So make the most
of it while waiting for it to arrive.

When I was on a work permit, I applied for a credit card and handed
the application in at a branch. The man there had a quick look at it,
saw that I had put down a '9' series SIN number and then suggested
that I fill the application in gain and omit the SIN number. He told
me that I wouldn't get the card if they 'knew' that I had a 9 series
SIN number. Without it I got the card just fine.

If you get an offer of employment, usually you can provide the SIN
later, or the employer can request one from HRDC.
