Default Itailan train question. Where to board?

This may seem like a dumb question. When boarding a train in Italy, how do
you know which door is nearest your assigned seat? The aisles are narrow and
when you carry luggage it is always difficult if you get on at one end only
to discover that your seat is near the other end. The only thing I ever
figured out is to look through the windows at the numbers above the seats.
What I'd like to know is if there is some convention or marking on the
outside of the car to indicate which end is which?

hi, as far as I have been able to discern, there is no way to locate
your seat from outside the car. Trains are put together in so many
different ways. I consider myself lucky if I'm able to locate myself
near the platform position of my car as the train pulls in. Some
stations have diagrams of train make-up and corresponding platform
sectors. billfrogg

Try asking the conductor, or just board anywhere on the train and walk
to your seat. Its not a big deal, but it certainly helps to minimize
the amount of luggage you carry with you.

I don't know if italian trains have this, but there is a system of
having a range of seat numbers written next to each of the entrance
doors to the car, so that you can tell which door is the better one
for you. Some swedish trains have this. I haven't paid sufficient
attention while in Italy to be able to tell you if they also have it.

No. Maybe occasionally some foreign car with such numbers gets on an
international train running in Italy, but Italian cars have no such
indications.

OK. Good to know I'm not the only one with the problem. My solution of
looking through the windows is not that bad.

In the station, on the quai, there is a diagrams of train (number of
carrozza --> sectors like A, B, C....) only for main trains.
Other details: number of the train, departure time, services on board,
schema of train, number of the train, if 1st or 2nd class, restaurant.

Bye, Pierfrancesco.
I hope the indications are sufficients. In Italy the train is a
Jungla!
