Default IT Security Professional Certification

I'm an IT professional in the UK. I'm looking to get a Skilled
Independant Visa.

I've worked as a messaging specialist for the last 10 years or so. I've
done quite a bit of IT security work in the past also, but don't have
any certification in this field.

My question is, what security related technical certification should I
go for? Is there one particular qualification that would be looked upon
favourably by the ACS?

Thanks

John

Hi,

While it wouldn't hurt to get a certification, it's not actually
necessary and might delay you unnecessarily. The ACS assessment is more
about satisfying them in as many categories as you can, calling on all
your IT experience. There wasn't actually one for security when I went
through it either! My last two years working have been in security, not
long enough to get CISSP which requires 4 years or 3 plus degree - and
I barely called on it at all when going through the CBOK.

Different story if you are going MODL and want to be recognised in such
a specialised field though, but it doesn't sound like you are.

What IT area are you going for (i.e. programmer, unclassified
elsewhere, security)? And are you going RPL?

I am leaving the Army with many many IT qualifications (£30.000
worth) but unfortunately they aint worth anything or so I am led believe
coz I aint got a degree or diploma etc to enable me to claim the points.

Do you have the info on the above security fields (CISSP) & what is MODL

Hi Dave,

If you don't yet know what MODL is then I suggest a quick google
followed by a long read of Booklet 6 (form 1119) at www.immi.gov.au is
in order! CISSP also pops up easily in a google search.

You do sound as though you might qualify for the occupational points
using those qualifications and experience, or experience alone, but no
point starting unless you meet the criteria for one or other visa.

Cheers,

George Lombard

Hi, My husband is in IT Security and he has the CISSP and the CISA.
These are both recognised world wide and therefore by the ACS

Thank you all very very much for all your help and info.

I leave the Army here in the UK in April 08 and we get a resettlement
grant to hel towards course for our next life !!

Therefore as my wife and I have decided a move abroad is the furure I
have started to collate things & Quals together and ask for info on what
is recognised and complete training in these fields with the
resettlement grants.

Someone said I would need 2 years work experiance once I have a
recognised qual but I'm sure I could claim the last 6yrs I have been in
this IT job towards this... i.e. ORACLE DBA / UNIX / XML / PLSQL etc etc
and get the boss to write a good ref.

Cheers & thanks

Dave

Its quite a hard exam - 250 multiple choice Q's over 6 hours! But it is
doable. If you have any IT Qualifications you may be able to leverage
them to get a security professional assesment from ACS
