If you feel you can meet the requirements for a skilled worker you can
submit your application to Buffalo as you have more than one year
status in Canada. The issue on renewing your student status is
completely separate from your immigrant application and the officer in
Vegreville will make a decision based on your ability to meet the
requirements of a visitor with permission to study. You can apply for
a work permit but you need HRDC certification if not working on campus
or you have to wait until you complete your studies and graduate and
you can apply for the validation exempt work permit as a post
secondary graduate for up to 12 months in an occupation related to
your course of studies. There are special rules being introduced for
students in Alberta and Manitoba and you would have to confirm where
you are studying to determine if they apply to you.
