Default Immigrant visa in passport + entry stamp = temporary green card?

Hi there,

This should hopefully be a fairly simple question to answer but I can't
figure it out from the USCIS website.

It relates to the bit on my immigrant visa that says 'Upon endorsement
serves as a temporary I-551'

I hold an immigrant visa, with my wife as my sponsor. We've been living
in the UK and are now arranging our move to the US. We are going to
travel by cruise ship to Florida. That is straightforward enough, now
the complication:

The ship stops at the US Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico before arriving
at Florida. My question is, is it OK for me to leave the ship and enter
one of these locations, have my visa processed etc. Will I then have a
'temporary I-551' and be able to get back on the ship and go on to
Florida - or will this cause problems when I get to Florida?

Any help appreciated...

James
